Culver City : Street Barrier Plan Altered

Share

Culver City officials have abandoned plans to install a barrier to divert traffic at the intersection of Higuera Street and Washington Boulevard.

Instead, a temporary barrier will probably be installed about 10 blocks away at the intersection of Hayden Avenue and Higuera Street.

The barrier is the latest proposed remedy for excessive traffic on Higuera Street, a popular shortcut to the Santa Monica Freeway. Approximately 16,000 cars a day travel Higuera Street, about three times as many as it was designed to handle.

The “Hayden Avenue diverter,” approved in concept Monday night by the City Council, would force westbound traffic on Higuera Street to either turn right onto Hayden Avenue or left onto Hayden Place, a cul de sac.

City staff hopes commuters will instead choose National Boulevard, which parallels Higuera Street, for freeway access instead. National carries about one-third the traffic it is designed to handle.

One more public meeting will be held before the diverter is installed sometime in February. The hearing date will be announced later.
