Three-quarters of Guam remained without electricity Thursday as civil defense, other workers and residents tried to recover from the 24-foot waves and 115-m.p.h. winds of Typhoon Yuri.

But Guam was spared the full brunt of Yuri, which with sustained winds of 165 m.p.h. and gusts of 200 m.p.h., was designated a super typhoon. It missed the island by 50 miles, officials said.

No deaths were reported from the storm that neared the island Wednesday night, forcing the evacuation of 2,600 residents.

In addition to sustained winds of 115 m.p.h., the typhoon dumped four inches of rain on the island. By Thursday morning, it was centered 175 nautical miles west-northwest of Guam, the U.S. military’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center said.

A civil defense official said 24-foot surf pounded the southern coast of the U.S. territory overnight and traveled as far inland as a quarter of a mile.

Officials hoped to restore power to at least 40% of the island by Thursday night, he said. Electrical power is needed to pump water to island residents.
