Fuel Spilled in Harbor but No Damage Is Seen
U.S. Coast Guard officials spent Friday cleaning up 550 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled into the Long Beach Harbor on Thanksgiving evening while a small motorboat was refueling from a barge.
The motorboat Lavaux was taking on fuel from the barge Phoenix 114 at 8:22 p.m. when the diesel was released. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Officials said no marine life appeared to have been harmed.
The cleanup was expected to be finished by Friday evening, said Chief Warrant Officer John Hollis. A containment boom--a curtain-like apparatus on floats--was being used to contain the diesel in a 1,500-square-foot area.
Officials classified the spill as minor. A spill is considered major when it is more than 10,000 gallons.
