Bilingual Report Cards: 2 Views

As parents of children in the Orange Unified School District, we are pleased that the district is making an effort to reach Spanish-speaking parents with the new bilingual report cards (“Bilingual Report Cards Aggravate Some Parents,” Nov. 23). Parental involvement is an important component of a child’s education and efforts to maximize this involvement will have a positive effect on our country’s future citizens.

Those parents who hastily reacted negatively when they saw the report cards need to understand the distinction between bilingual education (which is a separate issue) and the commendable efforts of the district to increase communication between parents and school representatives.

The future of our country depends upon the education of all of its citizens. We applaud the efforts of the Orange Unified School District to attempt to reach with bilingual report cards a large segment of parents of children in the district and hope that it is one of many steps that will be taken to help every child in the district reach his or her full potential.
