H oliday time brings to mind “The Gift of the Magi,” O. Henry’s classic tale in which a pair of jeweled tortoise-shell hair combs plays an important role in the lessons of giving and receiving. Hair combs don’t ordinarily carry such symbolism these days, but they are nevertheless the kind of present that is always appreciated and--better yet--actually used. Gifts of beauty and grooming accessories can be simple, practical things, such as shaving brushes and soap, or they can be wonderfully unnecessary treasures, such as antique perfume bottles, jeweled compacts and glittery toothbrushes that are certain to add a little luxury--maybe even a bit of glamour--to anyone’s day.
