Investment Threat Seen in U.S. Sanctions Against China: Any U.S. trade sanctions against China for patent and copyright violations threaten Taiwanese investment in the Mainland, Economic Minister Vincent Siew said last week. “Mainland investment made by our enterprises would be substantially affected” if Washington imposed measures against China, Siew said. “Taiwan businessmen should from now on think twice before investing in the Mainland.” About 2,500 Taiwanese enterprises have interests in China. The United States has threatened to raise tariffs on $1.5 billion worth of imported Chinese goods after the failure of talks on patents and copyrights. Siew said sanctions would harm Taiwanese investments in the shoe, toy, textile and leather bag industries whose products were destined for the U.S. market.
