A suspected crack cocaine dealer was fatally shot early Sunday as he leaned into a car at a La Puente shopping mall, then was dragged 140 feet before he was pushed to the pavement, authorities said.

A group of about 10 people who had been standing with him outside a doughnut shop at the La Puente Plaza about 2:15 a.m. also were shot at by someone inside the fleeing car, but they were not injured, said Deputy Bill Linnemeyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim’s identity was withheld pending notification of his family. He was pronounced dead at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina with a wound to the upper body, Linnemeyer said.

Two men were inside the red or maroon hatchback car with tinted windows from which the shots were fired, Linnemeyer said.
