Human growth hormone (HGH) is growing in popularity as the performance-enhancing drug of choice in the NFL according to a story in Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer. Unlike steroids, there is no test for HGH use.
HGH, a genetically engineered protein that accelerates the growth of bone and tissue, is approved for use only in children facing dwarfism. Its long-term side effects on adults are unknown, although initial research suggests that the hormone could cause heart and kidney enlargement.
