5-Year Project to Test Tainted Well Water OKd

The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board has approved a project to test polluted San Gabriel Valley wells, even though tainted water from the wells will be released into storm drains feeding into rivers that flow into the Pacific Ocean.

The tests, designed as part of a five-year plan to clean up the severe ground water contamination in the San Gabriel Basin, poses no harm to the environment, said John Maulding, executive director of the Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster, which is overseeing the tests on eight wells.

The project, Maulding said, will provide up-to-date information on the degree of contamination in individual wells, believed to have been fouled by toxic chemicals from sources as diverse as small dry cleaning firms and large factories. A public hearing on the plan, including the tests, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Monrovia City Hall, 415 S. Ivy Ave.
