MISSION VIEJO : Movie Theater to Be House of Worship

Share

The Planning Commission this week approved a request by a church group to convert a movie theater into a house of worship.

With little discussion, the commission unanimously approved the permit to allow the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Mission Viejo to set up permanent residence at the now-vacant Edwards Cinema building at 24821 Chrisanta Drive.

Plans submitted by the church group call for a 16,000-square-foot facility with seating for 650, along with classrooms and administrative offices.

The Vineyard Christian Fellowship was founded in 1986. The group, which formerly held services at Capistrano Valley High School, ministers to about 150 families in the area.

There was little opposition to the church conversion, which received the backing of city staff. Planning officials reviewed Vineyard Christian Fellowship’s plans and found no adverse environmental impact on the surrounding area, which includes office buildings, a bank, a fast-food restaurant and a library.

The facility will be the second church on the block, joining Mount of Olives Lutheran Church across the street. Police asked that the two churches avoid holding services at the same time because of the potential for traffic congestion on the short thoroughfare. Vineyard Christian church officials agreed to stagger service times to avoid conflicts with Mount of Olives.

Officials of Vineyard Christian Fellowship said they were delighted with the commission’s decision.

“We’re just very happy to be here,” said Bob Tremonte, associate pastor.
