Wayne Gretzky of the Kings said he supports mandatory testing for AIDS as the issue intensifies in professional hockey.

“For your own peace of mind, I don’t see why anyone would not want to be tested,” Gretzky, the NHL’s all-time leading scorer, said in Vancouver. “I can’t see any player objecting. I would like to see the NHL become pioneers and be the first professional sport to step forward and make (testing) mandatory.”

The league is discussing what actions to take since basketball star Magic Johnson’s announcement Nov. 7 that he is HIV-positive.

Gretzky’s statement came a day after a Montreal doctor said a former AIDS patient told him she had sex with about 50 NHL players.
