The NHL will not institute mandatory AIDS testing for players in the wake of a doctor’s report that an AIDS-infected woman said she had sex with dozens of players.

“We have no right to request the players to take mandatory testing,” League President John Ziegler said at the NHL Board of Governors’ winter meetings in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Clement Olivier, a Montreal AIDS specialist, said this week that a woman he treated told him before she died that she had had sex with about 50 NHL players.
