Los Angeles police on Saturday arrested 27 antiabortion demonstrators who attempted to block the entrance to a Van Nuys female health clinic, officials said.

Lt. Tom Mears of the Van Nuys Division said the arrests came during a protest in front of Planned Parenthood offices in the 14100 block of Magnolia Boulevard, where about 150 abortion rights advocates and antiabortion demonstrators had squared off.

He said police arrested members of Operation Rescue, a nationwide antiabortion organization, when they defied orders to vacate the private property at the owner’s request.

Mears said the 26 adults who were arrested for trespassing were booked and released on their own recognizance.

A 17-year-old girl who was also arrested was released to her parents.
