Volunteers Dressed for the Part Distribute Condoms
Thirty people dressed as large condoms gave away prophylactics throughout Los Angeles County on Monday, along with the message that they help prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
“We’re here to break the barrier--to let people know that next to abstinence, it’s the only way to have safe sex,” said Kimberly Higgins, event organizer and chairwoman of the Los Angeles County AIDS Awareness Committee. “And we wanted to get the message across in a fun way,” she said, gesturing to the giant human condoms surrounding her in a rainbow assortment of colors and sizes.
The volunteers, representing more than 30 community-based organizations, fanned out throughout the county for the second annual “Great L.A. Condom Put-On.” About 45,000 condoms were donated from most major manufacturers, Higgins said. Organizers especially emphasized thwarting the transmission of AIDS.
“If we confront people with condoms in the streets, chances are they’ll start talking about condoms at home,” said committee member Jack Carrel.
