A motel resident was struck by a car and killed Monday evening while crossing Beach Boulevard, police said.

William J. Cunnane, 61, was crossing the southbound lane when he was hit and thrown on the car’s windshield, Officer Al Bracket said.

Bracket said officers believe Cunnane was returning to his motel when he walked into the car about 7:30 p.m. He died at the scene.

Jeremy T. Blomgren, 21, driver of the car, was taken to a hospital and treated for facial cuts and bruises. He was not cited.

Officers said neither Blomgren nor Cunnane was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Police said Blomgren was not speeding. Officers found a key for the Westminster Motor Inn near the victim. Cunnane registered at the motel on Nov. 18, where he paid cash for his single room on a weekly basis, hotel manager Ray Tatel said.

Tatel described Cunnane as “an elderly man who stayed to himself,” passing the days watching television.

“He had his mail delivered by another elderly gentleman from Huntington Beach,” Tatel said. “I believe that was his previous address.”
