Birthday Party Planned Friday for UCI’s Greek Databank
UC Irvine’s Thesaurus Linguae Graecae will offer a free lecture and hold an open house Friday to open the 20th anniversary celebration for the world’s first electronic databank on ancient Greek literature.
The epic poetry of ancient Greece will be the subject of a talk by Gregory Nagy, acting chairman of Harvard University’s department of classics and president of the American Philological Assn. Nagy, an expert on Greek mythology and poetry, will speak at 2 p.m. in UCI’s University Club Lounge.
The open house will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the project’s campus headquarters at 345 Berkeley Place, Suite 345.
The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae was spawned in March, 1971, when former UCI graduate student Marianne McDonald offered Ted Brunner, then chairman of the classics department, $1 million to create a computerized data bank of Greek literature. Brunner took up the challenge in July, 1972.
Both the lecture and open house are open to the public, but space is limited. For information, call the TLG office at (714) 856-7031.
