Community Policing / Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks
THE PROGRAM: The Los Angeles Police Department has assigned 31 officers to full-time community relations duty in the San Fernando Valley. The officers, who in the past spent only a few hours a month on such duty, now work full-time with neighborhood organizations and individuals. One of the 31 areas is described below:
THE OFFICER: Ron Carpenter, Van Nuys Division, (818) 989-8308
THE AREA: Carpenter’s beat, stretching from the Valley floor to Mulholland Drive in the Santa Monica Mountains, is a diverse mix, ranging from residential neighborhoods to heavily commercial areas along Ventura Boulevard. The major crimes in the area are auto theft and burglary from vehicles. “We have a lot of cars being broken into on a daily basis,” Carpenter says.
