USAir to Cut Aircraft Noise: Moving to meet new federal noise-reduction rules, the airline said it will install hush kits on many of its DC-9 passenger aircraft. USAir said it is making an initial $34.2-million purchase of the noise-suppression kits from ABS Partnership of Wilmington, Ohio, and Pratt & Whitney of East Hartford, Conn., that will reduce noise 50% but not affect the plane’s performance. “The hush kits will enable us to significantly extend the economic life span of these reliable DC-9s while still allowing us to be good neighbors by meeting the strict new federal noise rules,” said Seth E. Schofield, the airline’s president and chief executive. USAir said it will begin installing the hush kits in 1994.
