Five students from Grace Brethren Elementary School in Simi Valley who placed first in a recent fund-raising drive got more than just a free lunch for their efforts Tuesday.

Celeste Walker, Sinthia Marquez, Amber Parkison, Hillary VanSloten and Krista Kellogg, all 11, got a ride in a chauffeured limousine to their favorite restaurant: Taco Bell.

“I told them they could go to the restaurant of their choice, and that’s the one they chose,” said Principal Thomas Barnhart, who accompanied the students to lunch.

The five students were among several teams of students who sold boxes of chocolate bars in the private school’s annual fund-raising drive in late November, Barnhart said.

The girls ended up selling more than $764 worth of candy bars while the fund-raising event grossed $28,000, school officials said.

The money will be used to buy a riding lawn mower for the school as well as playground equipment, Barnhart said. Some of the money will also go into a gopher abatement program. The varmints have caused serious damage to the school’s playing field, which is pockmarked with hundreds of gopher holes, the principal said.
