The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees this week unanimously elected Crystal Kochendorfer as its new president, succeeding Paul B. Haseman.

Kochendorfer, 48, was vice president of the seven-member board during the last two years. She was elected to the board in 1987.

“The challenges are huge,” Kochendorfer said shortly after being elected. “The whole nation is focusing on education, and it’s an exciting time for this district because we are doing our strategic (planning) for the future.”

Kochendorfer, a resident of Dana Point, also serves on the Capistrano/Laguna Beach Regional Occupational Board of Trustees and is a member of the Orange County School Boards Political Action Committee.

Kochendorfer, who is also the school district board’s liaison to the district council for parent-teacher associations, said she was honored to be chosen by her colleagues to lead the board in 1992.

“It’s a very important time to be involved in education and I’m happy to be a part of it,” Kochendorfer said.

Trustee Marlene Draper was elected vice president during the board’s annual reorganization meeting on Monday. Kathryn Itzel was elected clerk.
