Two armed teen-agers raided a home, held eight residents at gunpoint and ransacked the house Tuesday night in the county’s fifth such robbery in the last week and a half, police said.

Sgt. James Hudson said four of the attacks occurred in Orange and all involved Vietnamese families. Police said they suspect that the robbers may be members of traveling gangs.

“These attacks are not random,” said Sgt. Larry Pore, who is working with detectives on the case. “We believe (the suspects) target prosperous members of the Vietnamese community.”

On Tuesday, the robbers burst into a home in the 5100 block of East Ryals Lane and forced the residents, five adults and three children, onto to the living room floor.

They tied the family and ransacked the house for about 30 minutes before leaving with jewelry, Hudson. No shots were fired and nobody was hurt.

After the attackers left, one of the victims apparently worked free and called police.

Police have not released the names of the victims.

Police said this rash of incidents may be connected to attacks on residents in large Vietnamese communities throughout Southern California.

“The feeling is perhaps they do robberies and move on to another Vietnamese community,” Pore said. “They seem to target their own people and they are very mobile.”

The home-invasion robbery is a specialty of Vietnamese gangs who assume that their victims are not likely to own weapons or fight off attackers, Pore said. The attackers apparently watch houses over a course of several days before picking the best time to attack.

Garden Grove Investigator Al Butler said that a home invasion also occurred earlier this week in that city.

“The suspects have a knowledge of Vietnamese culture,” Butler said. “And they know that Vietnamese people still don’t necessarily trust the banks. So they come to terrorize them. This has been made evident a number of times.”
