Holiday Crafts Workshops and Activities for Children

Most local museums and community centers put their children’s art classes on hold during the holidays, but there are still a few that offer kids a chance to create a last-minute stocking stuffer. Here’s a sample:

* Ages 5 and up can make holiday ornaments using a variety of materials at the Children’s Museum at La Habra (301 S. Euclid St.) on Saturday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. No pre-registration, but class size is limited so arrive early. The museum also offers drop-in mask-making workshops from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, in conjunction with its current exhibit, “Festival of Masks,” which continues through Jan. 4. * Anaheim’s Brookhurst Community Center (2271 W. Crescent St.) presents a holiday crafts workshop Saturday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon. Open to ages 5 to 13, activities will include weaving, print-making and jewelry-making. Fee: $10. Pre-registration is required. (714) 254-5227.

* Arts and crafts, live holiday music performed on historic instruments and a chance to visit with The Jolly One are featured at a holiday tea hosted by the Anaheim Museum (241 S. Anaheim Blvd.) on Sunday, Dec. 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. “Come to Your Senses,” the museum’s current hands-one exhibit on the five human senses, continues through Dec. 31. * “Winter Wonderland” is the theme of a holiday crafts workshop at Irvine’s Youth Services Center (14301 Yale Ave.) on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Open to ages 6 to 12. Fee: $15. Pre-registration is required. (714) 724-6750.

* No special classes are planned, but the Discovery Museum of Orange County (3101 W. Harvard St., Santa Ana) will have extended hours during the holiday break and offers hands-on activities such as butter-churning and scrub board washing to help children better understand life during the Victorian Era. All activities are held in the museum’s turn-of-the-century Kellogg House, now decked out in its holiday best.
