The San Francisco 49ers needed for the Raiders to beat the New Orleans Saints Monday night to stay alive for a playoff berth. The 49ers were not pleased with the Raiders’ effort.

“Obviously, we were hoping for a lot better effort,” quarterback Steve Young said.

“It was frustrating,” guard Roy Foster said. “We left our chances in Jay Schroeder’s and the Raiders’ hands, and we never really should have put ourselves in that position.”

The 49ers conclude their season Monday night at home against the Chicago Bears. Young and Steve Bono have knee injuries. The third quarterback is Bill Musgrave. Coach George Seifert said he didn’t know who would start.

It takes the customary advanced degree in mathematical theory to figure out all the possibilities for NFL playoff matchups. But for the Washington Redskins, it’s either Detroit or Dallas the first weekend in January.

And Coach Joe Gibbs says he relishes neither prospect.

The Redskins (14-1) play the Philadelphia Eagles (9-6) on Sunday in their regular season finale. And while the Redskins aren’t discounting a team that features the NFL’s top defense, they already thinking are about a matchup with either the Lions--whom they routed in Week 1--or the Cowboys, who dealt them their only defeat.

“I was sitting there . . . trying to figure out one I wanted to play, and I couldn’t come up with one,” Gibbs said. “If somebody’s coming, I’ve got a feeling I’m not going to like it. I see the ghosts jumping out from all over the place.”
