PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Along Comes Another Embarrassment

Share

Another day, another Ram embarrassment: More discarded Rams made the Pro Bowl roster than current Rams.

The Rams were shut out of the Pro Bowl balloting for the first time in the 43-year history of the game. They have had at least one offensive lineman appear in the game every year since 1966.

Right tackle Jackie Slater, who appeared in seven of the last eight Pro Bowls and was the only Ram voted in last year, was the Rams’ only solid chance to make the squad this year.

“Well, it doesn’t really come as a surprise,” Slater said. “Obviously the recognition is one of the things you’d like to have happen to you when you strive to be the very best.

“But I think what happened to our football team is pretty much what happened to everybody. Nobody really stood out. Nobody really did a good enough job to warrant that, me included.”

As recently as 1989, the Rams sent six players to Honolulu.

Interestingly, one player the Rams cast away this year, tailback Gaston Green, was voted to the Pro Bowl team. Last spring, Green was traded to the Denver Broncos along with a fourth-round pick for tackle Gerald Perry and a 12th-round pick.
