Sematech Issues Optimistic Report: Seeking to build support for continued government funding, the Sematech computer chip research consortium released a glowing assessment of its accomplishments to date and sketched out how it would spend a proposed $1 billion over the next five years. The unique 13-company consortium, founded in 1987 to bolster the competitiveness of the American computer chip industry, said it had succeeded in restoring American companies to parity in certain key chip technologies and that the results justified an extension of its original five-year charter.
