Tamron Smith scored on a five-yard run with 5:42 remaining to give Youngstown State a 25-17 victory over Marshall at Statesboro, Ga., for the NCAA Division I-AA championship. Marshall led by 17-6 entering the final quarter, but Youngstown rallied for three touchdowns to win the title.
In other bowl play, Ricky Jones led Alabama State in passing, rushing and receiving as his team beat North Carolina A&T;, 36-13, in the Heritage Bowl in Miami, the first bowl game for predominantly black schools. And, Dane Damron, playing despite a broken passing hand, threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns as host Georgetown, Ky., beat Pacific Lutheran, 28-20, to win the NAIA Division II championship.
