Whether your New Year’s resolution is to eat less or exercise more, you can also ring in 1992 with a professional makeup job. You’ll get a polished face for the evening--and tips for improving everyday makeup techniques.

At Umberto in Beverly Hills, the most popular look starts with pale, matte skin, says Rose Freeman, manager of the salon’s makeup department. For the holidays, watch for opalescent eye shadows and vivid red lipsticks--particularly M.A.C.’s Russian Red, favored by Madonna. An hourlong session costs $45.

In Pasadena, at the new Amadeus Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel, makeup artists specialize in a clean look, accented by dramatic eyes. They use Dermalogica foundation and Aveda color cosmetics, a plus for partygoers because the lipsticks contain breath fresheners. A session here runs 45 minutes for $40. C.E.N.T.R.E., in Woodland Hills, offers looks that range from the classic to the fantasy-inspired; $40 covers a 45-minute makeup session and a hair consultation. (Take-home supplies of Sebastian’s Trucco line cost extra.) Of course, free makeup jobs are available at any of the cosmetics counters at Nordstrom stores in Torrance, Los Angeles, Glendale, Woodland Hills, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa and Santa Barbara. No appointment is necessary.

Most salons, however, prefer one to two weeks’ notice, so book your visit early. The process will take more time than you require at home. For on-the-go clients, places such as Umberto offer coat-check service and changing rooms. Says Freeman: “We have quite a few who leave here and go straight to a party.”
