More on Warhol: Although the amount was not initially disclosed under terms of a settlement, sources familiar with the case now say that the estate of Pop artist Andy Warhol received $8 million to settle its medical malpractice and wrongful death suit against New York Hospital. The estate had sought $10 million. Also under the terms of the agreement, New York Hospital conceded no wrongdoing. Warhol, known among other things for his paintings and prints of Campbell Soup cans, Brillo packages and Marilyn Monroe and other celebrities, died Feb. 22, 1987, at the age of 58, two days after entering the hospital for a gall bladder operation. Lawyers representing the estate had argued that Warhol died because he was overloaded with intravenous fluids after he was misdiagnosed as being dehydrated. The hospital disputed that claim and said Warhol died of a sudden and unpredictable abnormality in the rhythm of his heart. The estate and Warhol’s two elderly brothers, John and Paul Warhola of Pittsburgh, will benefit financially from the settlement.
