IDing Your Gems: A company has opened in Lake Forest that specializes in recording the individual characteristic of precious gems to aid in their recovery in case they are stolen or lost.

Gemprint, at 25422 Trabuco Road, uses a laser beam to log the individual characteristics of a gem. The digitized image is kept in the offices of Gemprint’s parent company, Omphalos Recovery System Inc., in Toronto, Canada.

The process, invented in Israel in 1972, costs between $35 and $45 per stone and is considered proof of legal ownership in the courts, according to Gemprint.
