Whittier : Ordinance Limits Types of Materials Used for Siding

Share

City Council members have passed an emergency ordinance they said would protect the look and character of Whittier neighborhoods.

The ordinance requires contractors to obtain permits before installing exterior siding. The ordinance also limits the types of materials that can be used on the outside of buildings to wood, stucco or masonry, or materials that look like them. Metal siding is prohibited.

The ordinance also requires developers to make the outside of their buildings conform to the look and character of the surrounding neighborhood. The goal is to prevent the community from “being overwhelmed by cheap architecture,” Councilman Bob Henderson said.

The emergency ordinance will be in effect for 45 days, giving the city staff time to develop permanent changes to the city codes.
