COLLEGE FOOTBALL / BOWL REPORT
Quarterback Billy Joe Hobert would just as soon forget his abbreviated appearance in Washington’s 46-34 Rose Bowl victory over Iowa last January.
Filling in briefly for starter Mark Brunell, who was named player of the game after passing and running for four touchdowns, Hobert failed to complete any of his three passes, one of which was intercepted, and lost two yards on his only carry.
“I wasn’t too excited,” he said. “I just (stunk).”
Hobert moved into the starter’s role when Brunell injured his right knee last spring.
Who will be Washington’s No. 1 quarterback next season?
“We’ll open it up in the spring,” Coach Don James said. “We’re not in competition now. There’s no such thing. It’s a done deal. Billy’s the quarterback. But in the spring, we open up all positions. A guy could be captain (and still lose his job).”
