A 17-year-old youth was killed Sunday by a bullet fired into his house from a passing car, Orange County sheriff’s investigators said.

The teen-ager, identified by family members as Bylon Hanna, died from a single gunshot wound to the torso.

Homicide detectives had no suspects and were unable to immediately find a motive for the drive-by shooting, which occurred at 1:30 a.m. in the 24000 block of Palmek Circle.

Witnesses said Hanna was sitting in his bedroom, talking to his brothers and friends, when the shots rang out. At least one bullet hit the brown stucco wall of the family home, while another shattered the bedroom window, ripped through the blinds and struck Hanna.

Sheriff’s deputies on patrol heard the gunfire and went to the house to investigate. Several residents said they heard three blasts from a gun.

“It sounded like loud backfires,” said one neighbor. “Then I heard a loud muffler of a car drive away.”

Jonathan Barnes, who lives next door to the Hannas, said he ran outside after the gunshots and caught a glimpse of a white Toyota sedan speeding away. Then, he said, the victim’s father ran out of the house screaming: “My boy’s been shot. They shot my boy.”

Barnes said he yelled at his wife to call 911 and then attempted to drive after the Toyota. When he could not find it, he went back and tried to help give first aid to Hanna until the paramedics arrived.

“A bullet went through his abdomen, and I was putting pressure on his wounds,” Barnes said. Hanna was taken to a local hospital by paramedics where he was declared dead, sheriff’s authorities said.

Barnes, who consoled several of the victim’s family members after the shooting, said they speculated that the shooting was a “retaliation” because Hanna or his brother “danced with the wrong girl at a party.”

Barnes said Hanna and one of his brothers apparently got into a dispute with other youths at a party Friday night. Although Barnes was unsure of the details of the argument or its outcome, he said there was a “hassle” over dance partners.

“This was beyond stupid,” he said. “This shooting should not have happened. It makes no sense.”

Eugene Hanna, the father of the victim, declined to discuss his son or the shooting.

Residents of the area, who described the neighborhood as quiet and family-oriented, said they were stunned by the shooting.

“It’s a real shock,” said John Juarez. “Nothing like this has ever happened here.”

Juarez and other residents said Hanna never caused trouble and could often be seen playing basketball with his brothers in the garage driveway.

“He was a good kid,” Barnes said.
