150 Iraqis Stage a Sit-In in Jordan to Protest U.N.’s ‘Cruel Sanctions’
More than 150 Iraqis staged a sit-in at U.N. offices here Sunday to protest the economic sanctions against their country.
“Lift the cruel sanctions against Iraq,” read one banner placed at the entrance of the main U.N. office in the Jordanian capital.
The Iraqis, most of whom were visiting Jordan, also submitted a petition to U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar urging him to help lift the blockade imposed shortly after Iraq’s Aug. 2, 1990, invasion of Kuwait.
Jordan’s Parliament has made similar appeals to the United Nations and the international community in recent weeks.
