U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar predicted no immediate breakthrough in peace talks to end El Salvador’s civil war, but he reported progress after meeting with the country’s president at the United Nations. The presence of President Alfredo Cristiani at the U.N.-mediated talks that have dragged on for two weeks brightened hopes that a quick agreement could be reached to end the 12-year war that has claimed more than 75,000 lives.
