Three people were left homeless by a fire that swept through their home shortly before midnight Monday, authorities said.

Costa Mesa fire officials could not immediately identify the residents who fled, but identified the owner of the home as Nancy Straub.

Fire Department spokeswoman Susan Wood said the fire broke out at 11:55 p.m. Monday in the single-family home in the 1600 block of White Oak Street. Wood said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but officials believe that it started in a clothes dryer.

“The fire apparently started not long after someone tossed some clothes in a dryer,” Wood said.

Wood said it took 20 firefighters about an hour to control the blaze and another 90 minutes to extinguish it.

“There was some aluminum material on the roof that made the house like an oven for our firemen,” Wood said.

Damage was estimated at $80,000.
