SANTA PAULA : Teen-Ager Held in Drive-By Shooting

A 17-year-old Santa Paula youth was arrested Friday in connection with a drive-by shooting earlier this week, police said.

The suspect, whose name was not released because of his age, was arrested at his Santa Paula house shortly after noon, Santa Paula Police Sgt. Gary Marshall said. The youth is being held at Juvenile Hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Shots were fired from a car that pulled alongside a couple stopped at 12th Street and Harvard Boulevard in Santa Paula on Tuesday, Marshall said.

A teen-ager in the car fired a single shot from a handgun, striking the car but not injuring anyone, Marshall said.

“Some gang signs were flashed,” Marshall said. But investigators also believe the suspect’s older brother used to date the woman in the other car, Marshall said.

The victims later identified the youth as being the gunman, Marshall said. No weapon has been recovered, he said.
