NO SLEEPERS: A new federal court rule ought to please anyone who has sat through a lengthy civil trial as an alternate: no more alternates. Judges will still choose eight jurors to sit on a six-person jury, but now all eight vote. If one juror has to drop out, then the seven left vote. . . . “I’ve never had an alternate fall asleep, but now at least those jurors won’t feel like they’ve wasted their time,” says U.S. District Judge Alicemarie Stotler, who sits in Orange County.
