Election Polls

Share

I hope the media’s “new approach” to reporting this presidential campaign includes abolishing the poll of the day. Already The Times (“State Voters Favor Bush Over Top Democrats,” Dec. 15) declares George Bush a winner. Never mind that we haven’t even heard the issues yet, let alone the name of Bush’s opponent.

Polls provide no information of substance. By the time they’re published, the pollees may have changed their attitudes. What’s worse, polls may discourage individual examination and objectivity. For persons who doubt their own inclinations or haven’t done their homework, it may be easier to simply run with the pack.

Please, just this once, let’s pretend nobody ever invented them.
