NHL ROUNDUP : Rangers Beat Jets, Gain Share of Lead

Sergei Nemchinov capped a three-goal outburst in the first period and assisted on two goals as the New York Rangers beat the Winnipeg Jets, 4-2, at New York Monday night and climbed into a first-place tie with Washington in the Patrick Division.

At the same time, the Rangers (27-15-1) tied Adams Division-leading Montreal for the most victories in the NHL.

The Rangers, who outshot the Jets 40-32, improved their record to 10-3 over the last 13 games. Winnipeg, the second-place team in the Smythe Division, lost for the eighth time in its last 11 games (2-8-1).

The Jets, winding up a three-game road trip with a 1-2 record, fell behind by three goals early and never caught up.

Toronto 3, St. Louis 2--Dave Ellet scored the winning goal with 8.5 seconds remaining in overtime at Toronto.

Ellet took Glenn Anderson’s back pass inside the St. Louis blue line and beat goalie Curtis Joseph with a slap shot from the high slot.

Anderson and Rob Cimetta also scored for the Maple Leafs, who outshot St. Louis, 41-25, and halted a five-game losing streak.
