THOUSAND OAKS : Panel Members Fear ‘Mansionization’

The Thousand Oaks Planning Commission has approved construction of a 6,700-square-foot mansion on Westlake Island despite some commissioners’ concerns about a possible trend toward “mansionization” in the city.

The commission voted 3 to 2 to allow retired businessman Jesse Cuppari, who owned a Los Angeles auto body shop, to build a two-story home that will occupy two lots on Oakshore Drive. Chairman Mervyn Kopp and Commissioner Marilyn Carpenter cast the dissenting votes.

The home will be the largest house on the Ventura County side of Westlake Island, where other houses range in size from 2,300 square feet to 5,600 square feet, according to a Planning Department report. Prices for single-family houses on the island start at about $500,000, said Chris Bouckaert, a Thousand Oaks real estate agent.

A house is usually considered a mansion when it has more than 4,000 square feet, Bouckaert said.

Commissioner Andrew Fox said he supported construction of the house because it will meet city building standards, including limitations on height and closeness to the curb.
