LAGUNA BEACH : Council OKs Plan for Beach Restroom

Share

A plan to put a seaside public restroom somewhere between Main Beach and Aliso Pier has been tentatively endorsed by the City Council despite opposition from the neighborhood.

John Gasparotti, a member of the city’s Design Review Board, and two other longtime residents have offered to raise funds and generate community support for the project and to give the toilet to the city at no charge. The toilet is needed, they say, in the 2.7-mile strip that does not have a facility from Main Beach south to Aliso Pier.

After searching for the ideal location, the men had narrowed their search to three possible locations: Anita, Brooks or Pearl streets.

However, immediately after the idea was presented to the City Council on Tuesday, residents near two of the three potential sites rose to balk.

“These areas are all completely residential,” said Tom Glidden, who lives next to Brooks Street. “I ask you each to consider how you would react if the city was to install a 24-hour toilet next to your home?”
