Palmdale, County Urge Widening of Boulevard

Palmdale and Los Angeles County transportation officials are urging the state to widen Palmdale Boulevard, a chronically congested artery that runs through the heart of the city.

The Palmdale City Council on Thursday unanimously urged the California Transportation Commission to pay for 75% of the $1.4-million project. The city also pledged to provide at least $350,000 for the effort, which will include repainting traffic lanes, eliminating some curbside parking and modifying and installing traffic signals.

The busy boulevard would be widened from four lanes to six between 10th Street West and 30th Street East, said Palmdale Public Works Administrative Assistant Dolores Buddell-Teubner.

The project is among 25 that the county has submitted to the state for funding, said Tim Galbriath of the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission. Supervisor Mike Antonovich is among those supporting the improvements for Palmdale Boulevard, also known at Route 138.

An average of 36,000 cars travel through the downtown section of Palmdale Boulevard daily, city officials said. The additional lanes would allow for nearly 50,000 cars.
