When Brett Hull faces the New York Islanders, the scoreboard lights up--and that usually means lights out for the Islanders.

Seven of Hull’s NHL-leading 44 goals this season have come against the Islanders, including the opener 39 seconds into the St. Louis Blues’ 6-3 victory Saturday night at Uniondale, N.Y.

Hull, who also had an assist, increased his point-scoring streak to 21 games. He also broke his team point-streak record of 20 games set during the 1989-90 season.

With New York’s David Volek covering him closely, Hull took a feed from Adam Oates and one-timed a 20-footer over the left shoulder of goalie Steve Weeks.

The loss ended the Islanders’ season-high three-game winning streak.

Edmonton 5, Detroit 5--Vincent Damphousse scored with less than two minutes to go in regulation and Bill Ranford stopped 47 shots to give the Oilers a tie at Detroit.

Jimmy Carson, Gerard Gallant, Paul Ysebaert, and Kelly Miller also scored for the Red Wings, who lead the Norris Division with 57 points.

Petr Klima, Kelly Buchberger, Craig Simpson and Dave Manson scored for the Oilers, who ended a three-game losing streak.

N.Y. Rangers 7, Quebec 2--Tim Kerr scored a goal in his return after a 39-game absence and Mark Messier had three assists at Quebec as the Rangers moved back into a first-place tie with Washington in the Patrick Division.

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Nordiques, one short of their longest slump of the season.

The victory was the 100th for Roger Neilson as coach of the Rangers.

Toronto 4, New Jersey 3--Wendel Clark scored his third goal of the game with 1:06 to play at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Maple Leafs ended the Devils’ four-game winning streak.

The victory was only the second in eight games (2-6-0) and third in the last 15 (3-13-1) for the Maple Leafs. It also was their first in eight games (1-5-2) against a Patrick Division opponent.

Boston 5, Philadelphia 1--Cam Neely scored his sixth goal in five games since returning from a leg injury to lead the Bruins at Boston.

Neely, who sat out the first 38 games of the season because of an injury suffered during the 1991 playoffs, scored on a power play at 2:29 of the third period to make the score 3-1.

Steve Leach also had his 20th goal and an assist to key the Bruins’ offense. His previous high was 18 last season with the Capitals.

Montreal 3, Hartford 2--Russ Courtnall returned from a three-month injury layoff to set up Mike McPhee for two goals at Montreal to spoil the night for the Whalers, who were playing their 1,000th game since entering the NHL in 1979.
