Noxious fumes released when photographic chemicals were overheated at the Union-Tribune building in Mission Valley on Tuesday morning sent six people to the hospital and forced 175 employees into the street, a spokesman for the company said.

Six people suffering from dizziness and nausea were treated at nearby hospitals, according to the spokesman, John Scanlon. The second floor of the building was evacuated, Scanlon said.

The fumes were emitted about 8:30 a.m. after heaters in an Associated Press darkroom on the second floor malfunctioned and caused photographic developer and fixer in the room to become overheated, a company press release said.

Firefighters placed large fans throughout the building to dissipate the fumes, the statement said.

Employees were allowed back into the building about 10 a.m.
