FULLERTON : Varela Will Resign From School Board

Fullerton School District trustee Anita Varela has announced that she will resign at the end of the month.

Varela, 36, said she decided to step down from the board because of health and personal reasons.

“Unfortunately, the stress and strain of giving this position all of my energy has caused my health to suffer,” she said in a statement to the board Tuesday night. “Therefore, I have decided to slow down. . . .”

Varela was elected to a four-year term in November, 1987. Her term would have expired last year, but the district consolidated its elections to coincide with this November’s general elections in a cost-saving measure. Terms of board members who would have faced reelection were extended.

“I’ve been trying to do too much,” she said Wednesday. “I have three small children, and I just decided to take care of myself and my health.”

Varela served as president of the board last year. Her husband is Rusty Kennedy, chairman of the Orange County Human Relations Commission.
