The Discovery Museum of Orange County invites visitors to step back in time this weekend with “The Fashionable Home,” a journey into the private style of a turn of the century home.

A costumed guide will lead a two-hour walking tour through the charming and fully restored 1898 Kellogg House, providing a slice of Victorian cultural and social history.

Visitors will be introduced to the interior design and decorative arts and trends popular from 1890 to 1915, those used by Victorians to create a sanctuary in the newly industrialized world.

Stained glass, leather-bound books, fancy needlework, crazy quilts and historic artifacts will be displayed as examples of the decorative artistry used by middle-class Victorian women to set their homes apart.

Hands-on demonstrations will also focus on hobbies and crafts popular during the Victorian era, such as “underwater bouquets,” flower arrangements created and displayed in water-filled globes.

After the tour, a light snack of tea and scones or pastry will be served on the Kellogg House porch or in the gazebo. And before returning to the hustle of the present day, each visitor will be treated to a small Victorian “favor” to take with them as a remembrance of their trip to the past.

Reservations are required. The tour is the second in a series of turn-of-the-century tours presented by the museum.
