San Onofre Unit May Close: One of three operating units at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station came one step closer to shutdown when state officials said the two operating utilities should be able to recoup a $450-million plant investment from ratepayers. The Public Utilities Commission’s Division of Ratepayer Advocates agreed with San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Edison to close the unit within the next two years, the commission said. The agreement, which must still be approved by the full commission, does not concern two remaining nuclear power units at the San Onofre plant, which are bigger and more modern. The two utilities would continue to run the plant.
