Memorial services were held Thursday in La Jolla for Clover Black Gaston, a member of several San Diego civic groups for 33 years and sister of the developer of La Jolla Farms Estates. She died last Saturday at age 83.

Gaston, a native of Lake Charles, La., moved to Los Angeles in the early 1920s and attended UCLA. She married Vernon H. Gaston, a real estate broker, in 1938. When he retired in 1958, the family settled in La Jolla.

Clover Gaston became politically and socially active in San Diego in the early 1960s when she served on the city library commission. From there, her activities included membership in the Women’s Assn. of the Salk Institute, in UC San Diego Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary and on the board of the San Diego Red Cross. She was an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists and United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Besides her husband, Gaston is survived by four daughters: Diana Toneys of Santa Maria, Yvonne Gaston of San Diego, Gail Vervack of Fayetteville, Ark., and Meredith Feddersen of Los Angeles. Other survivors include five grandchildren.
