Man Sentenced to Death for Murdering His Parents
A Valinda man was sentenced to death Thursday for the murders of his parents.
Pomona Superior Court Judge Alonzo Bazan imposed the sentence on De’Ondre Staten, 25, on the recommendation of the jury that convicted Staten on Dec. 2. Arthur Staten, 44, and his wife, Faye, 43, were killed Oct. 13, 1990, minutes after they returned to their Valinda home from a vacation to Egypt. Arthur Staten was shot in the head and his wife was stabbed 18 times.
The motive, prosecutors contended, was a $303,000 life insurance policy naming De’Ondre Staten as beneficiary. Staten, however, claimed that his parents were killed by neighborhood gang members.
