Californian Abducted in Manila
Three gunmen abducted an American businessman a few yards from his office as he drove to work in the Makati financial district of Manila today, Philippine police said.
They said Michael Barnes, vice president and general manager of Philippine Geothermal Inc., was taken from his car by men armed with automatic rifles and handguns.
Barnes, 41, from Long Beach, Calif., has been in the Philippines since 1986. It was not known whether the attack was politically motivated or a kidnap or robbery attempt. No group has claimed responsibility.
Philippine Geothermal Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the U.S. oil company Unocal Corp.
